How to Surprise Your Wife and Send Her Flowers at Work March 11, 2020 08:00

Los Angeles FloristYou love your wife and she loves you. You also know that (all married couple biases aside) she's an amazing human being who deserves to be treated like the queen she is. And that includes the occasional stunning gift, a gesture that goes one step beyond to send a truly special message. If you're looking to surprise your wife with flowers as lovely as she is, here's what you need to know to pull off the gesture.

Things to Think About

First, when you send flowers to your wife at work, keep in mind that she's receiving the flowers in public. As such, you need to keep three key factors in mind:

  1. Her personality
  2. Her coworkers
  3. Her office

If your wife loves being the star of the show, a grand bouquet is perfect for her. But if she doesn't like being the center of attention, go for a smaller, simple arrangement of a few stems, something sweet but understated.

Beyond the arrangement size, think about what blooms are best suited to your wife's personality. Sunflowers, for example, are best for a sunny, cheerful free-spirit. Orchids are chic and exotic, perfect for a nonconformist fashionista, while dignified, sophisticated calla lilies are ideal for elegant, modern women of style.

However, keep in mind that your wife is receiving the flowers at her workplace, so even though it's a gesture between the two of you, it's important to know how her coworkers will respond. If they're the type not to make a fuss and that's what your wife prefers, you're all clear to send a bouquet.

Finally, don't forget to consider the office environment itself. Does your wife's desk have enough room for flowers? Does she share a desk space with someone else? Is her office formal or casual?

Plus, some offices are extremely strict about who can enter the building for security reasons, a delivery man may not be allowed to drop off flowers to her desk. If your wife works in one of those offices, you're better off recruiting one of her coworkers or having flowers delivered at home.

Do Your Homework to Send the Right Message

If you've considered all of those factors and you've got the green light to go ahead with your floral surprise, it's time to do your homework to send the right message.

Start by thinking about the occasion. If you're sending flowers for an anniversary, look for more romantic arrangements (bonus points for including her favorite flowers). If you're sending flowers just because your wife is amazing and deserves it, a bouquet of her favorite flowers is always a safe bet.

From there, think about what kind of message you want to send. Do some reading on the language of flowers to make sure you're not sending flowers with the wrong implication. For example, unless your wife's favorite flower in the world is yellow roses, avoid them--they mean jealousy, as does yellow hyacinth.

Plan Ahead

From there, it's time to start planning ahead.

Ideally, plan your gesture at least a week or two in advance. Also, pay attention to what time of year it is--if you're sending flowers during Valentine's Day, make sure to schedule your delivery well in advance to make sure the florist has space.

In addition, many florists can give you an approximate window when the delivery will arrive. Plan ahead and think about when your wife comes and goes from the office to ensure she'll be at her desk when the delivery arrives.

Also, check her schedule--you don't want the flowers to interrupt a meeting or arrive when she's out of the office for an event.

Think About How to Deliver

Part of planning ahead involves thinking about how to deliver the flowers. It sounds obvious, but it changes the message (and if your wife works in an unusual office, you may need a bit of creativity).

The easiest way to get flowers delivered is to find a delivery service and get the flowers delivered to her personally. Every major city has at least a few of these services, so do your homework on which services are reliable and high quality.

Alternately, if you really want to make a sweet gesture, you can deliver the flowers yourself. If you choose this route, the devil's in the details. Try to take a day or half-day off work to ensure you're available for the delivery and dress nicely. This way, you get to see her face when you surprise her.

That said, you may not be able to take time off of work, or her office may not allow people without a badge or proper permission to get into the office. In those cases, it's time to get her colleagues in on it. It doesn't matter who does it so long as it's a surprise, so reach out to her work friends and explain.

The only trick is to make sure no one gives it away, so choose your accomplices wisely. But if you arrange everything in advance and are careful, you can pull off a special surprise that will make her week.
